The Government Headquarters Open Day 2025 will be held on 18 and 19 October. In order to complement this annual event, the Municipal Affairs Bureau (IAM) is holding a flower show in the Government Headquarters where floral arrangements and landscaping techniques are showcased. Large-scale themed display areas are set up in the Protocol Palace and the grounds and gardens on this joyous occasion where the public and tourists can tour around the Government Headquarters and spend precious family time here during this special weekend.

As Macao is one of the cities to host the 15th National Games, the theme of the flower show this year is “the 15th National Games”. By creating a festive and vibrant atmosphere and encouraging public participation, an array of flowers and plants are landscaped to build an energetic ambience and present the unique elements of the National Games. Accentuated by over 20 varieties of blossoms and botanic objects, the ping pong chrysanthemum is featured as the theme flower of the show. The grounds and gardens of the Government Headquarters are transformed into a floral display area presenting an extravaganza of athletic dynamics and floral aroma.

The flower show consists of four themed display areas, namely the Protocol Palace front yard display area, the lawn display area, the flower pergola display area, and the Protocol Palace indoor display area.

Protocol Palace front yard display area

As the 15th National Games is the theme of the Open Day, mascots “Xiyangyang” and “Lerongrong” will be greeting visitors at the main entrance of the Protocol Palace. The name and the emblem of the 15th National Games are formed using the theme flower ping pong chrysanthemum, highlighted by the logos of the competition events staged in Macao. The theme of the show stands out as a distinctive, exuberant and multi-coloured motif, catching visitors’ attention.

The Macao-staged competition events include volleyball, 3x3 basketball, 5x5 basketball, table tennis and karate.

Lawn display area

The predominant colours red, purple and green of the emblem of the 15th National Games are transformed into dancing ribbons. The recurring motif of the giant floral installations is encapsulated by the theme flowers of the area, namely the cotton tree, bauhinia and lotus, each representing the three host cities Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Macao respectively. Waltzing through the colourful blooms are mascots “Xiyangyang” and “Lerongrong”, signifying the integration and connectivity, as well as the boundless vitality of the three robust cities. Nurtured by the enthusiastic atmosphere of the 15th National Games, the flowers are in full bloom.

Flower pergola display area

In the flower pergola display area, the logos of the events staged in Guangdong and Hong Kong are arranged on the left and right respectively. The green backdrop is adorned with undulating waves and the theme flowers, creating an evocative vista reminiscent of a sea of rippling blooms. The distinctive sensory features presented in this area are the fragrance of the dancing petals and the vibrant dynamics of the events.

The Guangdong-staged competition events include gymnastics, weightlifting, wrestling, badminton, diving, shooting, track and field and swimming. 

The Hong Kong-staged competition events include: triathlon, basketball, fencing, handball, track cycling, rugby sevens, golf and beach volleyball.

Protocol Palace indoor display area

Inspired by the bouquets presented to athletes, the grand floral arrangement features three key flowers, the cotton tree, bauhinia and lotus to echo the three host cities Guangzhou, Hong Kong and Macao. The giant bouquet of the 15th National Games is further embellished with the lively and adorable mascots, offering warm welcome and greetings to each and every visitor.

The scientific name of ping pong chrysanthemum is Chrysanthemum × morifolium “Pompon”. It is a perennial herbaceous plant in the Asteraceae family that is named for its ping pong ball-shaped flowers. It has globular blooms and comes in a variety of colours, including yellow, green, white, red, and pink. The ping pong chrysanthemum is adored by many as its floriography suggests “reunion, happiness, and longevity”, symbolising everlasting joy and unity.
